The Turtle Trot is here! You can register this morning (Saturday, Aug. 31) at Main Beach from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. We still have T-shirts available, and they'll be given out on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last! Packet pickup is this morning at Main Beach starting at 7:15 a.m.

This yearís Labor Day Weekend 5K run/walk starts at 8:30 a.m. at Main Beach. The event has become a holiday tradition, and in recent years has been run entirely on the beach. Itís presented annually by Amelia Island Runners, our hometown running club.

Proceeds benefit Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch, turtle patrols in Fort Clinch State Park. and AIRís youth running programs. The race features t-shirts with original sea-turtle artwork by noted local artist Sandra Baker-Hinton, available to race-day registrants while supplies last, and turtle-themed, lime-green coffee mugs for the first 600 finishers.

"Last year, we had over 600 registered runners and walkers.... We are trying to make sure everyone gets a mug," said race co-director Robin Lentz.

Robin says the race has moved back to Saturday and a later start time, 8:30 a.m., to make sure the runners and walkers have the best tide conditions.

Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners, masters (age 40 and over) and grandmasters (age 50 and over), and the top three male and female finishers in each of 15 age groups. The awards wonít be medals or plaques Ė theyíll be backpacks. "The backpacks will be functional and help the folks that place 'show off' how well they did," Robin says of the unique awards.

For kids age 12 and younger, half-mile and one-mile fun runs will begin on the beach at 9:30 a.m. Entry fee for the kidsí runs is $10. Preregistered kids get a t-shirt, and all finishers receive a ribbon. Parents are welcome to join their kids during the run for no charge too; just fill out a registration form.

Registration for the 5K is $25 for everyone. And save your race bib for door-prize drawings at the post-race awards ceremony!

Headphones, animals, bicycles and strollers are not allowed on the course. Parking is available in the city lot at Main Beach Park.

Also, we hope you'll support our race sponsors, listed below. The Pecan Roll Bakery will be offering 10% off on race day if participants drop by with their race bib!

And please come back here later for race results and pictures. (We're still having website issues, so if the front page hasn't updated, please check us out on Facebook!) If you have questions, please ask at the registration table.

Says Robin: "The Turtle Trot 5K is a fun event for the entire family and raises money for a great cause- saving the special creatures that call Amelia Island their home!"
